Fiber-Rich Diets Help Reduce, Eliminate Heartburn

Need another reason to get more nutritious fiber into your diet? How about reducing the chance of getting heartburn, or making it much less severe if you’re already dealing with it?
First and foremost, keep spicy, greasy and fatty foods to a minimum. Anything that’s hard to digest makes your stomach work overtime, and all the excess digestive acid produced can lead to acid reflux, or heartburn. Portion control is another thing to watch — sensibly sized meals don’t overload the stomach, and cause food and acids to back up into the esophagus.
It’s important not to go overboard, though. If you’re not eating a lot of fiber, up your intake slowly so you can avoid bloating and gas as your system gets used to the new dietary regimen. No sense in causing heartburn when you’re working to avoid it.
Not sure where to start? Try foods with whole grains, along with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Broccoli, for example, is packed with fiber, as are carrots, peas, mushrooms … the list goes on and on. Not only will you be helping out your intestinal system, you’ll also be getting plenty of vitamins and minerals in the bargain.
