What is a Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) breath test?
A H. pylori breath test is used to detect the presence of Helicobacter pylori bacteria in the stomach or small intestine. H. pylori bacteria produces an enzyme called urease, which breaks down urea and produces carbon dioxide when doing so. This carbon dioxide can be measured. Who needs a Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) breath test?
H. pylori bacteria can be the root cause of some GI conditions. An H. pylori breath test could be recommended if you have, or are suspected to have, conditions like gastritis or ulcers in the stomach and/or small intestine. The test is sometimes used to confirm that a course of antibiotics has successfully eradicated H. pylori.
You should contact your GI provider to be assessed for the H. pyloria bacteria if you are experiencing any of the below symptoms:
- Bloating
- Weight loss
- Heartburn
- Nausea
- Pain occurring when you eat or take an antacid
What should I expect during an H. pylori breath test?
During your H. pylori breath test, you will be asked to breathe into a breath collection bag. Then you will be given a solution or tablet containing urea. After a short time, you will be asked to breathe into a second breath collection bag so that the carbon dioxide levels in your breath can be measured and compared to your earlier sample. The test takes approximately 20 – 30 minutes.
You will be asked not to eat, drink or smoke for a few hours before your procedure. Your GI provider may also recommend you to avoid or stop taking certain medications for some time beforehand, including antibiotics. Specific pre-test instructions will be given to you by your provider prior to the breath test.
